Coleshill Star Awards 2018 were presented by Deb Leary a local entrepreneur and Simon Davies a local teacher and a contestant on “The Voice”
The event was put on by Coleshill Town Council to honour local volunteers. There were also cheque presentations to the local voluntary organisations who had been awarded contributions from this year’s £10,000 grant scheme (now in its 5th year)
Music was provided by Royal Birmingham Conservatoire musicians Will Crawford and Emily Hopper – The Cherry Stone Duo (harp and classical guitar)
The Carer Award – sponsored by Morrisons PLC (presented by Tony McConville)
This is aimed to recognise those volunteers giving help to those in need or those involved in supporting those being cared for. It may be that there is a significant devotion of personal time, resources or expense or perhaps a noticeable level of voluntary effort to achieve a particular benefit to those needing care, for instance, in leading or influencing a particular campaign or body that is a care provider.
The award is designed to be equally appropriate to either a volunteer giving support on a “one to one” person in need of care basis (e.g. care for a relative or neighbour) or a volunteer in an organisation assisting a group of individuals in care provision or care improvement campaigns.
The nominees were:
Winner: Rosalie Whitehead – Chair of Woodlands PTFA, founder of Love Coleshill, markets & events.
Runner up: Deb Bromage – for volunteering work with Beavers, Honesty Shop and the book shop
Shortlisted: Jenny Joyce – TA at Coleshill School, church Sunday school and Macmillan fund raising

The Leader Award – sponsored by Sainsbury’s (presented by Jane Jordison)
This award could be made to the volunteer person who is the best leader, coach, coordinator, guide or mentor of others. It could be that this leadership is given “one to one” or to a group. Leadership has been interpreted in its widest form (including heads of voluntary organisations, skills coaches such as a sports team manager, music or language teacher or a particularly motivational, committed or knowledge-sharing committee leader such as a chairman, secretary or treasurer /finance officers. The only stipulation for the judging is this should be in a voluntary capacity: paid /professional leaders or coaches are not included.

The Charitable Effort Award – sponsored by Wagstaff Developments (presented by Jaklynne Malkin)
This is to celebrate an individual volunteer giving most benefit or exerting the most effort in support of their cause. This could be to recognise a significant amount of money raised for a charity, club, association or cause, assisting it to get public recognition, greater stature in the public eye or someone obtaining improved facilities or conditions by influencing other bodies. This might involve devoting a significant amount of time and effort to a cause not necessarily considered a charity (examples would be a social group, a sports club or a service-providing organisation or a campaign group).
Runner up: Jean Allen – founder of the B46 forum, stop the quarry & School crossing campaigns
Winner: Luke Hundleby – highly respected Community Hub volunteer
Shortlisted: Chris Leeson – Love Coleshill Chairman, event organiser & fund raiser
Shortlisted: Simon Toon – Sgt at Arms, WWI Vigil organiser and Remembrance Parade helper
Shortlisted: Mike Walpole – helps the church, the Coleshill Post, bell rings and Green & Yellow tours.
The Uniformed Award – sponsored by Oakland Plastics (presented by Cllr Caroline Symonds)
This award is designed to cover a volunteer most committed to their service with and for a uniformed organisation or group. The term “uniformed organisation” has been interpreted in its widest form (e.g. Cubs / Guide movements, Royal British Legion, cadets, etc) and all ages, including ex-service personnel still involved in voluntary duties.
Unlike the Leader Award, the Uniformed Service Award attempts to recognise the dedication, loyalty and commitment to duty that is exhibited at any level of the organisation. It might capture, perhaps, the recognition of the ‘unsung’ hero as well as the leader figure.
Winner: Simon Toon – Sgt at Arms, WWI Vigil organiser and Remembrance Parade helper
Runner up: Claire Blackwood – 5th Coleshill Brownies leader
Shortlisted: Roy Charlesworth – Warwickshire County Chairman of the Royal British Legion & motivator
Shortlisted: Ray Richardson – Coleshill Royal British Legion fund raiser
